One of our first tasks for this project it was to do a precedent research based on a list. I want to use this space as a critic for this stupid task. I more than recognize that precedent research it is important. Having vocabulary about architecture is essential, because architecture it is about suggestions, not answers. We read the space and circumstances and tried to suggest the best for it.
The task it was to choose between some projects. All of them have importance, because I roughly searched them to choose my three. But, We are expected to do a 16-18 year old school and we were given nurseries. We were asked to redraw and search some things about the project and to do a model in 1:100. All was gave of a sudden. And, of course, after an exhausting two weeks of total commitment with my project, I had do listen a very offensive comment about "how the brazilians like to travel" of someone who has position and should have respect for her students.
My three choices were:
Montpelier Community Nursery in UK, because of how the project engaged natural lightning, nature as a learning space and its context ( a neighborhood )
DS Nursery in Japan, again, how the project was able to engage natural lightning, nature and also different materials as inspirational for learning process.
Carpenter Center in USA, because it is Le Corbusier. I know that this school, as a european school, hate this architect. But I recognize the importance of Le Corbusier's work as a whole and I think every opportunity to study his buildings and understand what works, what does not work and how those aspects can be read and interpreted is really important for being an architect. Contemporary architecture has a huge influence of international style and Le Corbusier is one of the biggest faces of it. Also, Carpenter Center for Visual Arts it is a Harvard building and an important archive of films. It is a dense urban example, more close to the brazilian reality and of every metropolis. There is materiality, well planned light, an interesting idea of fluxus thorough and inside the building. It is, in my opinion, the best project in the list and the most close to the theme 16-18 year old creative school.
This task it was, in my opinion, almost useless. I was forced and offended to do a research in break time about examples, that I happily found one related to my project. My final submission it was poor, although I can consider that I understood what I wanted to. I thought that my previous research in project III, the one that Farida widespread that no one did right, it was way better. I was able to understand a huge range of projects in many levels of focus, since materiality until technical details.
